If the Academy Awards for 1985 had been announced in 1996, The Color Purple would've won several Oscars: Best Picture (Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Quincy Jones), Best Actress (Whoopi Goldberg), Best Supporting Actress (Oprah Winfrey) and Best Director (Steven Spielberg) seem reasonable in posterity. The film's shutout does not. I'm aware while watching that my emotions are being played, or conducted by a maestro, but the ending gets me every time.
